This 8-week hybrid course is for writers at all levels of experience (even beginners) and shows participants how to create compelling nonfiction stories from their own life experiences. All forms of creative nonfiction, which includes memoir, personal essay, the literary essay, humor, and narrative nonfiction, are options to pursue in this class. In three in-person, classroom meetings, and five weeks of online email exchange, the participants and instructor explore classic nonfiction challenges, such as forming the narrative line, developing an authentic voice, conveying emotions, developing secondary characters, using thematic elements, writing dialogue, and much more. The class combines assigned reading and discussion with writing exercises, suggested assignments, and respectful peer review. Participants are encouraged to submit work-in-progress and discuss writing goals with the instructor. Small class size ensures personalized attention. Publication opportunities are also discussed.
