C017– Fiction Writing: Writing Outside Your Experience

chung

This is an exciting creative writing course that violates the popular dictum; "write what you know," to productively force the writer into someone else's psyche. The course is a hybrid offering with three in-person class meetings and five weeks of online exchange. The student is asked to develop stories about places and people very different from those he or she knows; e.g., a woman writing as a male character; a middle-class male writing as a homeless youth; or a teacher writing as a rock drummer. In this workshop participants learn the critical elements of fiction needed to credibly define a character that is "not me," such as narrative voice, dialogue, and setting research. For all experience levels--including beginning fiction writers. Small class size ensures personal attention. For more course information contact the instructor, Sonya Chung: sonya_chung@hotmail.com.
